The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) Approves New Quality Information Framework (QIF) Standard

ANSINew QIF™ V1.0 Standard:  A Significant Breakthrough for the Metrology Industry

Burleson, Texas, USA December 23, 2013 — The (DMSC) Dimensional Metrology Standards Consortium announced today the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) has approved QIF v1.0 (Quality Information Framework, version 1.0) as an ANSI standard.  This new standard covers the digital interoperability needs for a wide variety of use cases including feature-based dimensional metrology, quality measurement planning, first article inspection, and discrete quality measurement.

ANSI approval of QIF v1.0 indicates that QIF has attained a consensus approval from a large number of subject matter experts in the digital metrology industry. (See “About DMSC” below.) The QIF standard was designed to meet the highest industry requirements and to satisfy technological gaps that have traditionally cost industry hundreds of millions of dollars annually. The DMSC has met, and continues to meet the need for urgently required national standards in quality measurement in a timely fashion. ANSI’s accredited Standards Developing Organizations (SDOs) operate in accordance with national and often international guidelines, and have been verified by government and peer review assessments.  The ANSI Board of Standards Review (BSR) approved the standard on December 19, 2013.

QIF aims to define an integrated set of XML information models which enable the effective exchange of metrology data throughout the entire manufacturing quality measurement process - from product design to inspection planning to execution and analysis.   QIF V1.0 models include quality characteristics (e.g., tolerances) and measurement features as defined in the ASME Y14.5 specification and the Dimensional Measuring Interface Standard (DMIS). QIF V1.0 provides a standardized solution for defining and exchanging measurement scope (e.g., bill of characteristics), measurement plans, and measurement results.
The “Founding Principle” of the QIF is simply this:  All information models for transporting quality data should be derived from common model libraries so that common information modeling components can be reused throughout the entire quality measurement process and, as a result, the entire process will be inherently interoperable.

The work is not complete, from the QIF v1.0 foundation, significant QIF v2.0 efforts are being devoted toward responding to model-based metrologies primary pain point that is obtaining a complete and accurate 3D product definition with semantic geometric and dimensional tolerances.  QIF v2.0 work for a cost effective XML exchange of product definition with various conformance levels of semantic PMI (e.g., GD&T) will satisfy many CAD to model-based metrology use cases.   Additional work will define and apply measurement resources and measurement rules toward generating and communicating feature-based measurement plans based upon a plant, departments, or supplier’s measurement resources and rules defined by your company and/or by part type.  Finally, work for QIF v2.0 will address the MIL-STD-31000 terminology and additional non-dimensional measurement applications.
