Capvidia participates and supports the Collaboration and Interoperability Congress 2014 dedicated to fostering and improving collaboration and interoperability throughout the product lifecycle.

Model Based Enterprise is defined as “A fully integrated and collaborative environment founded on 3D product definition detail and shared across the enterprise to enable rapid, seamless, and affordable deployment of products from concept to disposal.” What this really means is that 3D CAD data needs to be reused in downstream processes. For downstream tasks such as NC programming or CMM inspection, you need to ensure that 3D Models have adequate quality and don’t get accidently changed in the translation process. Quality assessment and validation are completely unrelated tasks. But if the quality of a 3D model adheres to quality standard such as VDA 4955, AIAG D-15, GALIA, ODETTE, JAMA, or MIL STD 31000 A, the likelihood of the validation passing increases significantly since the translation process becomes more reliable.

The quality of a 3D model needs to be addressed at the source, before the data is released to downstream applications. Potential manufacturing limitations can be easily expressed in parameters defining the quality criteria. This will effectively prevent distribution of data that can cause manufacturing problems.

MIL STD 31000 A provides a good set of criteria to streamline downstream processes and make them more reliable. This presentation will demonstrate how quality criteria and validation procedures can be utilized to take full advantage of the MBE concepts.

Each time a 3D model is “reused” in different CAD/CAM/CMM system, you need to ensure that it did not accidentally change its definition. This applies both to the 3D geometry and to the PMI (Product Manufacturing Information). This process is called validation. By comparing 3D model geometry, topology and PMI with its original (authority) representation we make sure that the model does not change.

Validation processes delivers confidence and assurance about the data integrity making all processes traceable and eliminating potential liability issues. It complies with ISO-9000/9001 standards and results in increase of overall quality.

MIL STD 31000 specifies validation process as one of the critical elements in the implementation of the MBE concept. These concepts will be illustrated with examples and practical industrial cases.
